KATE Caoimhe ARTHUR

“I am really excited to learn about the work of the Agri-Food and Bioscience Institute and to work as a collaboration with all partners.  I can’t wait to put the voices of the experts and the land itself together and hear what they say.

Kate Caoimhe Arthur lives in Co. Down. She spent some years in the Cambridgeshire Fens, where she was once Fenland Poet Laureate.  She worked in collaboration with the fine art printmaker Iona Howard which involved a lot of walking in the Fens with Meg the dog.  She has won the Fenland Poet Laureate competition and the Spelt competition.  She has been published in The Tangerine, The Stinging Fly and Blackbox Manifold.  She is working on her first collection.

NORTHERN IRELAND Focus: LAND, LIVESTOCK AND LIVELIHOODS

Livestock production is at the core of Northern Ireland’s land use sector and its economy. Ongoing research and developments in practice play a key role in supporting viable farming businesses, nature-rich ecosystems and pathways to net zero.

Kate will begin by meeting specialists at the Agrifood and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) in Hillsborough to define the direction and focus of research and identify sites for fieldwork.

AFBI is a leading provider of scientific research and services to government, non-governmental organisations and commercial organisations. Its areas of focus include sustainable agriculture, environmental protection and grassland and plant science.

This placement gives an opportunity to join AFBI specialists and others, especially across Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University who represent the NI academic partners, in an enquiry around livestock farm systems in Northern Ireland, including current practices and adaptations, public perceptions of farming, and technical and nature based innovations for change.
