Dr Ali Foxon is the founder of the Green Sketching movement and author of The Green Sketching Handbook: Relax and Reconnect with Nature. She lives with her husband, son, and cat on the edge of the beautiful Peak District National Park surrounded by hawthorn trees and boggy moorland.
Ali has a PhD in climate change and nature conservation from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change and two geography degrees from the University of Oxford. Earlier in her career, she worked as a climate change advisor, researcher and scientific editor with a wide range of organisations, including the UK water industry, IUCN and the United Nations Environment Programme.
Soon after the birth of her son, Ali started sketching outdoors. Before long, she realised it had quietly transformed her relationship with nature, creativity, and her mental wellbeing. She changed career, keen to find a way to make the extraordinary benefits of noticing and sketching nature more accessible.
She developed the green sketching approach to offer people of all ages and abilities a simple, affordable and rewarding tool for nature connection and wellbeing. The aim of green sketching isn’t to create more artists but happier, resilient nature lovers (aka ‘joy spotters’!).
Ali now delivers green sketching events, training and bespoke guides to schools, businesses, environmental and mental health organisations. She is currently training a global network of green sketching ambassadors.
